Paul’s plans built Mustang II was
completed in 1986 and has over 1750 hours on it now. It is a stock
airframe with the exception of his own wing tips, Glasair windshield,
and low profile 6" wheels instead of the smaller 5" which
would produce less drag. The engine is a stock IO-360A1B6D except
for a crossover exhaust system and ram air induction. The engine
and cylinders have over 3500 hours on them since new and the engine has
not been overhauled since it was installed in the airplane over 15 years
ago. In 2000 the rest of the field in the FX category had less than 400
hours total time on their airplanes except the Sidewinder which had 925
hours. Notice that even when compared to the fastest retractable
gear Lancair 360, Paul was only a little over 8 minutes slower for an
average speed difference of only 16mph. Not bad for an airplane
that costs only a fraction of the price! N80PC is Paul’s 2nd Mustang II. The first airplane he finished in 1972. It is owned by Leo Bush and now has over 2500 hours on it. In fact Paul has never owned another airplane besides a Mustang and 2,600 of his 2,900 hours flying time is in Mustang II’s. Paul and his wife Sara have traveled quite extensively in his Mustangs. They make trips from Ft Myers, FL to Louisville, KY several times a year. At Sun-N-Fun, Paul said that she was trying to convince him to make another trip out west this summer. The pictures below are from their return trip from Oshkosh to Ft Myers last year after the race. Do you see the kitchen sink anywhere? |
