Local places of interest
include Greenfield Village and
Henry
Ford Museum (highly recommended), the
Detroit Institute of Arts, downtown Detroit as well as Windsor Casinos,
the popular Detroit
Zoo, and numerous shopping malls including the nearby
Somerset
Collection which has Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Marshall
Fields,
Nordstrom, and many other smaller stores (just be sure to leave enough gas
money to get home before spending it all shopping at Neiman Marcus,
it will not take long). Neighboring downtown Birmingham is also very exclusive.
Other interesting sites include the historic homes of the auto barons. The Matilda Dodge Wilson Estate on the Oakland University campus in Rochester is less than 10 miles from us. They have a very impressive holiday walk. The Dodge Estate / Meadowbrook is very close to the Daimler-Chrysler American headquarters. The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House is located in exclusive Grosse Pointe Shores on Lake St Clair. The Henry Ford Estate is located next to the Fairlane Mall on the University of Michigan Dearborn campus. This is also near the Henry Ford Museum and of course the Ford World Headquarters. The University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, about 60 miles from us. Well known for its Aerospace Engineering department, an afternoon browsing through one of the libraries can be most interesting. Ann Arbor itself is a very nice town to visit. An hours drive north of us (20 minute flight) is the small town of Frankenmuth. It is called "Michigan's Little Bavaria" and features many small shops and outstanding restaurants. Just outside of town is Bronner's Christmas Wonderland. It is the largest Christmas store in the world that attracts over 2 million people per year. They will pick you up from the small grass airstrip (66G) just outside of town. |
